There will be no vegan lunches served for a while at Café Kåriander. The café remains closed after summer due to a staffing shortage.

The campus at Stockholm University is busting with new students. Many of them visit Studenthuset, which holds the Infocenter as well as SUS’s Service Desk.

But the café, which is located in the same building, remains closed. The café, owned by Stockholm’s Student Union (SUS), serves vegan lunches and coffee at lower prices for union members.

The plan was to open café Kåriander the 28th of August, when the autumn semester starts. However, a shortage of staff has put a stop to those plans, according to Ruben Westfelt, chair of the company board.

The company Cateringverkstan i Sverige AB runs the café and is owned by the student union.

– The café is closed due to a shortage of staff. We are short of a café manager and personnel members. The manager is responsible for hiring personnel, and how many workers we have depends on how much they are able to work, but generally, we hire two to three.

Unclear when it will open again

The board was notified of the café having no manager during the summer. The search for a new one has been going on since then.

– We have published a job advert and have also looked amongst our own. It is regrettable that the café is closed. Our ambition is to have operations in the heart of campus.

At the moment, there are no plans to close the business, according to Ruben Westfelt. However, it remains unclear when it can open again.

– That depends on whether we find a qualified manager. It has been difficult to find the right person, so we hope to find one as soon as possible.
